Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid generally obtained from vegetable oils and some animal fats. Its chemical formula is C18H36O2. It is used in soap making, cosmetics, lubricants and food additives. It is also used in many industrial processes. Stearic acid has a white crystalline appearance and is usually found in a solid form. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents.
